Athlete of the Week: 2/10/2020 – 3/8/2020

Male Athlete of the Week

Name: Tripp Johnson

Sport: Wrestling

Stats: State Qualifier

Coaches Comments: Tripp is a senior state qualifier. He was also the sectional champion and placed 3rd at Districts this past weekend. He is currently ranked 9th in the state at his weight class and a team captain.

Female Athlete of the Week

Name: Jordan Hobbs

Sport: Girls Basketball

Stats: 80 points in first four tournament games.

Coaches Comments: Jordan played outstanding during the tournament run. She recorded 80 points during the first four games and went 18/18 from the free throw line. She had 26 points, 10 rebounds vs. Lakota West in the District Championship. She also had 20 points, 6 rebounds during the Sectional Final against Centerville. During both of those games threw up and one of those was on the floor in the middle of the game. She averaged 7 rebounds during all the tournament games.

Male Athlete of the Week

Name: Slade Surikov

Sport: Hockey

Stats: 22 Goals on the Season

Coaches Comments: Slade has been a consistent scorer for our team. He leads the Capital Hockey Conference White Division with 22 goals on the season. He is also currently 2nd overall in the entire league in scoring.

Female Athlete of the Week

Name: Maggie Clough

Sport: Swimming

Stats: 1st in two events at Sectionals

Coaches Comments: Maggie won two individual events at Sectionals this past weekend. She won the 100 yard Butterfly and the 100 yard Backstroke, which qualified her for Districts. She was also a member of the second place 200 yard medley relay and winning 400 yard freestyle relay which also qualified for Districts.

Male Athlete of the Week

Name: Jake Kowalski

Sport: Wrestling

Stats: 20-1 on Season, 2nd time Athlete of the Week

Coaches Comments: 1st Place at the Maumee Bay Classic, Defeated #1 ranked wrestler in D3 in the finals to win the classic. Defeated multiple state placers as well at the classic. He is currently ranked #4 in the state of Ohio.

Female Athlete of the Week:

Name: Hannah Hill

Sport: Swimming

Stats/Coaches Comments: Hannah won three events (50 yard freestyle, 100 yard freestyle, 100 yard backstroke, and was 4th in the 200 yard backstroke). She also was apart of three second place relays. Then finally she anchored the winning 400 yard freestyle relay in an amazing 48.87 seconds in helping lead the girls’ team to its first ever Southwest District Swimming and Diving Classic. The Classic is the largest high school meet of its kind in the country with more than 100 schools participating in preliminaries at ten different sites and the top 16 from all those sites competing in the finals at night. Two of those relays (400 yard medley relay and 200 yard freestyle relay) set new school records.

Male Athlete of the Week:

Name: Will Coffield

Sport: Wrestling

Stats: 20-1 record, Team Captain

Coaches Comments: Over the Christmas break Will had a great few matches. He was the runner-up at the Greater Miami Valley Wrestling Association Holiday tournament, which is one of the biggest and most premier tournament in Southwest Ohio. He has been a great captain for us and also has helped lead the way for two team championships.

Female Athlete of the Week:

Name: Peyton Nations

Sport: Girls Basketball

Stats: 20.2 points per game, 5.9 rebounds per game

Coaches Comments: Peyton has had a great season thus far and especially over the break. She has been one of the most consistent re-bounders this season and the best scorer.  Through the season she has also shot 53% from the field and 75% from the free throw line. Her points per game over the holiday break is as follows:

Tecumseh – 18 pts, 7 reb.

Springfield – 24 pts, 5 reb.

North Central – 22 pts, 6 reb.

Hamilton Southeastern – 19 pts, 6 reb.

West Clermont – 18 pts, 5 reb.

 

 

Athlete of the Week: 11/18/2019 – 12/2/2019

Male Athlete of the Week:

Name: Willieon Yates

Sport: Boys Basketball

Stats: 32 Points, 6 Rebounds, 4 Assists – 10-15  FG, 5-8  3FG, 7-8  FT (against Fairfield)

Coaches Comments: Willieon was a big part of our victory on Friday. He controlled the game and was effective at both ends of the floor. He was able to score in a variety of ways, and also find the open guy. On defense, he guarded the best guy and was second on the team in rebounds for the game.

Female Athlete of the Week:

Name: Madison Ring

Sport: Girls Bowling

Stats: 186.2 for 2 contests (match against Franklin and Elks Invitational Tournament).  She maintains the highest strike and spare percentage at 82% for the girls team. She is currently the 10th ranked girls bowler in the GWOC.

Coaches Comments: Madison led the girls team to its first win of the season against Franklin 1780-1257 on November 21, she bowled games of 176 and 208.  Madison led the team again at the Elks Invitational Tournament on November 30 with the team placing 10th out of 20 teams.  She bowled games of 198-151-198 for a 547 series.  She finished 3rd overall and was named to the All-Tournament Team. Madison is a new addition to the team this year.  She worked hard all summer, practicing, improving her skills and participating in challenging tournaments.

 

Athletes of the Week: 10/7/2019 – 10/20/2019

Male Athlete of the Week:

Name: Landon Palmer

Sport: Football

Stats: 1055 yards passing this season, 9 passing touchdowns, 72% completion percentage, 2 rushing touchdowns on the year.

Coaches Comments: Landon is a Senior captain and has been a great leader on this team. He had one of his best games of the season and his career this past Friday against rival Lebanon. He threw for 277 yards with 2 touchdowns. He completed 20/25 of his passes making his completion percentage 80%. He also ran the ball for 37 yards with another touchdown on the ground. Landon was calm and collected the whole night and it showed in the stats. He looks to continue this success this Friday in Springboro’s last home game of the regular season and senior night against Trotwood. The game will be determining the GWOC National Division Champion and help in the fight for a chance to host a playoff game.

Female Athlete of the Week:

Name Abby Nugent

Sport: Girls Tennis

Stats: 9-0 record, 1st at GWOC, 1st at the sectional tournament, named Co-GWOC player of the year, and STATE CHAMPION

Coaches Comments: Abby had a tremendous regular season and she continued that success into the post-season. She was undefeated in the regular season and then placed first at the GWOC tournament for singles. She then went on the win the sectional tournament. She qualified for the state tournament after placing second at the district tournament. At the state tournament the first day she defeated Angelica Ross (1-6, 6-0, 6-2) and Lily Black (6-4, 6-2). Then the second day at state in the semi-finals she had a hard fought win against Cassie Alcala (6-4, 5-7, 6-0). Then in the state championship she faced Ananya Aggarwal and won in only two games (6-4, 7-5). She became Springboro’s first Div. 1 Girls Tennis State Champion and the first overall State Champion since 2011. Great Season Abby!

Athletes of the Week: 9/23/2019 – 10/6/2019

Male Athlete of the Week:

Name: Luke Lawrence

Sport: Boys Golf

Stats: 78 at GWOC, 1st Team All GWOC, Shot 74 at the sectional tournament.

Coaches Comments: Luke has down really well this year and even better in the later half of the season. Shooting a 78 at GWOC and then a 74 at the sectional tournament. He also finished in the top among the GWOC and was named 1st team All Conference.

Female Athlete of the Week:

Name Abby Nugent

Sport: Girls Tennis

Stats: 9-0 record, 1st at GWOC, 1st at the sectional tournament.

Coaches Comments: Abby has been great addition to the team this year. She has become undefeated in the regular season going 9-0. She also won 1st at GWOC for singles. She won the sectionals tournament after beating 4 other players and not losing a single game. She will be continuing districts on Thursday.

Athletes of the Week: 9/9/2019 – 9/22/2019

Male Athlete of the Week:

Name: Tommy Mitchell

Sport: Boys Soccer

Stats: 2 Goals, 3 Assist in the past 3 games.

Coaches Comments: Tommy led the Panthers with 2 goals and 3 assist over the past 3 games. During this stretch it included state-ranked #10 Lakota East, #12 Northmont, and #8 Carroll.The teams overall record through these three games was 2-1.. This helped propel Springboro from #5 in the area to #3 in the area this past week.

 

Female Athlete of the Week:

Name: Emily Grotjan

Sport: Girls Golf

Stats: 9-Hole average – 42, 7th in GWOC

Coaches Comments: Emily is having a great senior season. She’s a great leader on and off the course and leads our team in the lowest season average. Emily shot a season low 38 against Sycamore (9 holes) and 74 at the Lady Elk Invitational (18 holes).

 

 

Athletes of the Week: 8/26/2019 – 9/8/2019

Male Athlete of the Week:

Name: Jordan Gilkison

Sport: Boys Golf

Stats: 9-Hole Avg. is 35.1 (Best in GWOC), Individual medalist in the 2 tournaments played this past 2 weeks.

Coaches Comments: Jordan has had an unbelievable junior year thus far. He is combined 12 – under par in 10 events this year and has been the individual medalist in 7/10 of those events.

 

Female Athlete of the Week:

Name: Natalie Haverland

Sport: Girls Soccer

Stats: Leads the team with 5 goals and 1 assist.

Coaches Comments: She had 3 goals and an assist in the Springfield win during the past two weeks. She is a 4 year Letterman and a senior captain that has lead us to a 4-0-1 start with a #2 area ranking and also #11 in the state.

Male Athlete of the Week:
Name: Aidan Kraus
Sport: Cross Country
Stats: Senior – Regional 5th place finalist in ’19 Track and Field, 11th place at Moeller Invitational
Comments: Aidan has come a long way since his first season of Cross Country. Through injury and surgery during the 2018-2019 seasons he has had to rebuild his running from the start. This past weekend at Moeller, Aidan was second on the team and 11th overall at Primetime event. His 17:00 5k time beats his career personal best already in the first meet of the season. His previous career best was in October of 2018. Aidan is looking to achieve a state qualifying birth this season. He is also a captain of the Springboro Cross Country Team
Female Athlete of the Week:
Name: Mia Pagliarini
Sport: Volleyball
Stats: 9 Aces, 39 Digs, and 2.2 Pass Rate
Comments: Our nomination for Athlete of the Week is senior libero, Mia Pagliarini. While she leads the team in digs and serve receive pass rate, Mia’s communication and competitive drive is what makes her stand out on the court. Her work ethic and vocal leadership is vital to our team’s success.
